Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your AC Unit

Do you have an older air conditioner? Has your air conditioner been making strange noises or not cooling the house as well as it used to? If so, you might wonder if it’s time to upgrade to a new system. Sometimes, issues with your air conditioner could be fixed with a simple repair, but oftentimes, there are larger issues at hand.  Below are some of the most common signs that it’s time to replace your AC unit. 

Air Conditioning Unit’s Age - If your air conditioner is 10-15 years old, than a replacement is most likely eminent. Once a system reaches a certain point, issues will start piling up and the unit will no longer function properly. 

Constant Repairs - Repairs aren’t uncommon, even with the best air conditioning units, but if your air conditioner needs to be frequently repaired, then you have a problem. Constant repairs are not only costly, but they’re an indicator that something isn’t right with your system. At this point, replacing your AC unit is a much better investment than continuing to sink money into repairs. 

High Energy Bills - If you notice that your energy bills have been increasing, it could be a sign that your air conditioner is no longer working as intended. Once an AC unit begins to lose its efficiency, upgrading to a new unit is a wise choice. A new air conditioner will be much more energy efficient and save you money on your utility bills. 

Warm Air Blowing Out - If warm air is blowing out of your vent when your AC unit is running, then it might be time for a replacement. This could be a sign of a damaged compressor, low refrigerant, or something bigger. 

Poor Airflow - If the air isn’t coming out as strongly from your vent or if the airflow through the house seems weak, your air conditioner isn’t providing proper circulation. This leads to the AC unit running more than it should, leading to higher bills. If this is happening, there’s a good chance that your system needs to be replaced. 

Strange Sounds - While a strange sound coming from your AC unit could often be fixed with a repair, there are times when noises are a bigger issue. If you notice loud noises or any frequent unusual sounds coming from your air conditioner, you might be in line for a replacement. 

Strange Smells - When strange smells start coming through your vents or from your AC unit, it could be a variety of issues including burnt-out wire insulation or mold buildup. If you notice consistently strange smells, it could be time to have your air conditioner replaced.
